NetLibrary eBooks - Texas State Library has purchased some e-books that lean towards the academic side, if this is what you are looking for. In Summer 2011, NetLibrary will change over to EBSCO, and the format will be printable and more user-friendly.
A note on formats: eReaders support many formats. All support txt and pdf documents files as well as basic image files like gifs and jpgs. Other than these basic formats, compatibility varies. For Kindle, you can download free books in mobi format. For Nook, download books in epub format. With an iPhone (and iPod Touch and iPad), you can use the free app, Stanza that has access to many of these sites listed above when you click on “get books”.
Librivox - are public domain audio books read by volunteers. Some of the readers are fantastic, others not so much. Lots of great books, though.

You might like the format better, though. Lit2Go: MP3 Stories and Poems - Includes a sizeable collection of downloadable audiobooks in MP3 format, and in many cases an accompanying e-text so you can read along online.
LoudLit.org pairs "great literature and accompanying audio" and notes that by "putting the text and audio together, readers can learn spelling, punctuation and paragraph structure by listening and reading masterpieces of the written word."
