Everybody uses YouTube – whether it’s to watch music videos, check out hilarious clips of cats doing funny things, or to watch video game replays, the video streaming site is one of the most popular on the Internet. More than 1.8 billion people log into YouTube every month, and between them (and the untold hundreds of millions more who just casually browse) almost five billion videos are watched every day. Fast Internet, like WiFi at home or work or 4G phone service, makes streaming our videos a snap most of the time. However, there are times when you might not have access to the Internet. Whether you’re on a plane, on a subway, out in the country or just in places where signals are blocked, if you want to listen to music or watch videos, you have to have already downloaded and stored it on your phone. Luckily, there are ways to download content from YouTube! Download music off the internet.
All of these suggestions will let you download the entire video, not just the music portion. Most of these methods will either download the music file to your computer or convert an MP4 into MP3 so you can play it locally on any device. One of the websites I suggest keeps the format as MP4 audio using AAC but the end result is the same.
If you do want to download music and videos from YouTube, you should know up front that it is against YouTube’s Terms of Service unless you are a YouTube Red member. Depending on where you live it may also be illegal. You should find out where you stand before using any of these tools and techniques.
Download music from YouTube
The obvious place to begin is the only completely legal and legit way I know of downloading music from YouTube, and that is to subscribe to YouTube Red. As a YouTube Red member, you can legitimately download music to your device for offline play. The download has a finite life of 30 days but will enable you to listen whenever and wherever you like.
When using YouTube Red, select the three dot menu icon on an album or track page and select Download. The music will download to your device and you can play it free for those 30 days.

As far as I know, YouTube Red is your only completely legit option. Everything else will need checking locally for its legality.
Download music from YouTube with a web tool
There are dozens, if not hundreds of websites that enable you to download a video or album from YouTube. Some are better than others and some are most definitely faster than others. However, some are outright malware factories designed to get you to download sketchy or dangerous software. There are a few that place very highly in search engines that purport to let you download music from YouTube. They let you paste the URL, pretend to perform the conversion and then take you to another page with a big download button. Unfortunately, that button does not download the file but another program entirely. Be careful out there!
I have personally checked these two sites, and they are safe but they do try to get you to do other things, so beware.
Were I to ever download from YouTube, I would use Savefrom.net. The site is fast and very straightforward. Paste the page URL from YouTube into the box, let the site find the media and then select a quality from the dropdown box. Depending on the format, it will offer MP4 Audio or MP3. Newer uploads are MP4 Audio using AAC which most music players will happily work with. You can download just the sound or the video as well. Note that this site will try to get you to download other things and install unwanted browser extensions, so be careful and just get your download.
OnlineVideoConverter.com works in much the same way and will give you a full video. Paste the URL into the box in the center of the page, select the format and then More Settings. Select the maximum possible audio quality and then hit Start. The file will be converted and a download link provided. As is typical with many of these sites, another browser tab will open with scamware in it. Just disregard and get your video file.
Download music from YouTube with a browser extension
If you don’t want to use a website, you can have your computer do the work by using a browser extension. I feature a couple for Firefox and Chrome but there are others for Safari, Opera and likely others.
Video DownloadHelper does much the same thing. It adds a menu icon that allows you to download videos from just about anywhere online. Install the extension, restart Firefox and you’ll see the icon. Select it when you see a video you want and choose a format and quality. Simple.
Video Downloader professional
Video Downloader professional is a Chrome extension that allows you to download media from almost any website. It adds a top menu icon that you can click to download even embedded videos as well as download music from YouTube.
